Community Outreach Committee
A HUGE thank you to all the fantastic volunteers who participated in the Special Olympics Winter Games Basketball Tournaments on February 2nd and February 9th! We had an exceptional volunteer turn-out and a wonderful time was had by all who attended the events. Stay tuned for information on volunteer opportunities for the big Spring Games Track and Field Event in May!
Over the past several years, our Bar Association has been privileged to develop a bond with Shepherd's Table through the community outreach initiates rejuvenated by recent Bar presidents Trish Weaver and Jack Quinn. Shepherd’s Table is a nonprofit organization in downtown Silver Spring supported by volunteers, religious organizations, government, businesses, foundations, and individual donors. The Bar has been sending groups of about 7 volunteers from our legal community the second Friday of each month for the past few years. We are honored to support Shepherd’s Table’s mission to provide help to people who are homeless or in need by providing basic services, including meals, social services, medical support, clothing, and other assistance in an effective and compassionate manner. Since 1983, Shepherd’s Table has been a necessary and effective resource welcoming and serving those in need in Silver Spring. Shepherd’s Table builds upon its successful strategy to make the community a better place for our clientele and others to live, work, and operate a business.
Members of our Bar have generously donated their time to help prepare and serve meals and such volunteerism has not gone unrewarded. Within the last month, the Bar’s liaison to Shepherd’s Table, Dan Shaivitz (firstname.lastname@example.org), was elected to the Board of Directors for Shepherd’s Table and will be serving in that capacity for the next three years. Two new Bar members have volunteered to replace Dan to coordinate volunteers each month: Kathleen Fawcett (email@example.com) and Revee Walters (rwalters@offitkurman). Dan, Kathleen, and Revee are very excited about their new roles. Please reach out to any of them if you wish to volunteer individually or as a firm.
Part of Shepherd’s Tables recent success has come through its relationship with our Bar. In the future, the Bar will have opportunities to contribute to the organization’s enduring success. Each year, Shepherd’s Table hosts an annual fundraiser; this year is no different. On March 30, 2014, Shepherd’s Table will be lifting the curtain on its event at the Fillmore, “Always Room for One More”, which will feature live music and auction. There are many more opportunities for sponsorship and every sponsorship counts. Also, Shepherd’s Table is soliciting items for its silent auction. Please contact Dan if you or anyone you know is interested in sponsoring, making a donation to, or attending this wonderful event.
