Mentee Application                        Mentor/Mentee Guidelines

New Practitioner Section

Thank you to everyone who made it out to the New Admittee Courthouse Tour and Reception on March 26, 2014.  We had a great turn out and hope all of our new admittees felt welcomed!  We particularly appreciate Judge Debelius and Judge Moffett for participating in the tour and helping our new admittees get acclimated around the courthouses.
We hope to see everyone at the Spring Mentor/Mentee Happy Hour!  It will take place on Wednesday, April 30, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the American Tap Room located in the Rockville Town Square.  Mentors and mentees are strongly encouraged to contact each other and make arrangements to meet at the Happy Hour.  At 6:30 p.m., the Happy Hour will be open to all members of the Bar.  We invite you to join us for a terrific evening of food, drink and good company!
SAVE THE DATE: The New Practitioner Section is teaming up with the Law Firm Management Section on Law Day, Friday, April 25, 2014, to present Two Sides of the Same Coin:  How associates, managers and solo practitioners balance the practice of law with the business of law. We are very excited to have Sara Kropf,  Geoff Gilbert, and Amy Strent speak at what we know will be a dynamic and informative program in which new lawyers will learn how to avoid common mistakes and handle common problems that face new practitioners, as well as how to exceed the expectations of their managers; managers will find out what new lawyers really think, what motivates them and how to effectively communicate with them to produce your desired quality of work product; and all lawyers will benefit from a discussion of how to manage the business side of small law firms, including common mishaps for solo practitioners.  No matter the subject matter of the law you practice, you won’t want to miss this unique perspective on managing your law firm as a business.  Bring your questions for the panel!

April showers bring courtroom superpowers, or at least they might if you choose to join us for this month’s Chamber Chat.  April’s Chamber Chat will be hosted by the Honorable Cheryl A. McCally, on Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at 12:30 p.m.  Judge McCally joined the Circuit Court bench on March 5, 2010.  Prior to her tenure with the Circuit Court, Judge McCally was an Associate Judge in the Montgomery County District Court, from June 12, 2006 to March 5, 2010.  Before her judgeships, Judge McCally was a partner in the law firm of McCally & Hall, P.C.  Bring your lunch, along with any questions, and take advantage of this opportunity to get to know a member of our Circuit Court bench in an informal setting.  No R.S.V.P. is required, but it is appreciated for planning purposes only. The Chamber Chat is open to all members of the Bar, not just members of the New Practitioners Section.  Judge McCally’s Chambers is located on the 6th floor in the Circuit Court Building at 50 Maryland Avenue, Courtroom 15.  If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Judy Cornwell, Chamber Chat Committee Chair, at (301) 838-3314 or

CALL FOR MENTORS!!!  With a new group of admittees sworn-in in December, there is a great demand for mentors at this time. Please share your experience and offer your guidance to us young attorneys who need it most and are eager to accept it.
Likewise, if you have been practicing law for less than seven years and would like guidance from an experienced attorney and get involved in our community of attorneys, apply to get a mentor.
Applications to be a mentor or mentee are available at, and can be submitted at any time to Jillian Morris at
Save the date for our Spring Happy Hour on Thursday, April 30, 2014 from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. at the American Tap Room located in the Rockville Town Square.
